Simple steps to HELP reduce heat loss from your home.

Insulation & draughts

  1. Check insulation in your loft, especially the loft hatch. If it isn't insulated then anything like old bedding, clothes taped to the hatch (loft side) will help prevent escape of heat into the loft space.
  2. Any large gaps around windows and doors can be sealed with insulation cheaply purchased from most diy stores
  3. Old draughty front and rear doors - Fitting heavy curtain or blanket using a expanding curtain pole in front of the door can help prevent draughts (especially from old letterbox)

Boiler & Heating

  1. Turn thermostat down even by just 1 Deg - can save upto 10% on gas bill
  2. On combi boilers turn the hot water control down to where it is comfortable to have a shower or wash up without adding cold.  Why pay to heat hot water only to cool it down !
  3. Heating temperature. Most boilers you can control the amount of heat which goes into your radiators. Most are simply set too high around 75-70 Deg. For a modern insulated 2/3 bed house you may be able to turn this down as low as 55-60 Deg.It may take the house slightly longer to heat up, but as long as it does so in a reasonable time and to a comfortable heat then the lower you can go the better. Please note this definitely only applies to condensing boilers.
  4. Radiator thermostatic radiator valves. In rooms where these are fitted (shouldn't be in a room where main thermostat is) set to around a mid position and see if that comfortable enough for you. The instructions usually have what the numbers equate to in Deg C - Unfortunately most installers tend to throw them away ,which of course I,ve never done !!! :-)These instrucions can usually be found on manufacturer website

There are other steps which can help but these would require the help of a professional and carry costs which would need taking into account.

Some of these things include changing electric hob to gas (gas is still1/3 price of electric).

Changing old non condensing boilers to more modern ones.

This offers possibly the largest saving over a reasonably short period, especially if you are currently using an electric shower.
